Dr. Karlo Mila is a poet, writer, academic and mother. Karlo has written two books of poetry, one of which won
the 2005 Best First Book of Poetry at the Montana New Zealand literary awards. She has also written a range of
academic articles, government reports, as well as social, political and cultural commentary as a former
Dominion-Post Op-Ed Columnist. Karlo spent the last five years undertaking postdoctoral research exploring
what is healing according to indigenous knowledge from the Pacific Islands of Oceania.
Karlo lives in Auckland with her family. Of Tongan and Pakeha descent, Karlo's PhD thesis explored culture,
identity, and wellbeing among the NZ-born Pacific generation. Karlo is a Facebook addict, a regular public
speaker and a Leadership NZ Alumni 2013. She is well-known for her loud laugh and slightly inappropriate sense
of relentless irreverence.
