Filling the Tank: Resources for Times of Disruption and Uncertainty

Tēnā koutou,

Right now where we are the rain is falling, and it’s falling pretty hard. The ground is so wet and full that the water’s pooling on top, wreaking havoc with systems that are designed for a world without downpours of this kind.

A pandemic in its third year, a cost of living crisis, a skills shortage, global uncertainty: these are the weather conditions Aotearoa’s leaders are facing right now, and many of us – those in Auckland especially – are facing into the weather with a sinking feeling about what the future will bring.

The great news is that rain fills empty tanks. This current emergency reminds us of everything we’ve learned over the last few years of navigating our way through a period of unprecedented uncertainty. We’ve got so much more in our toolkit, so many more resources that we can draw on, than we had three years ago. These are the capacities for leadership in our times – the ability to stay afloat when the world’s awash, to hold vision, to put people at the centre, to always uphold your values.

This pānui is a virtual emergency kit for leaders in need of new tools, reassuring reminders, fresh ideas and practical links. You’ll find nourishing (non-perishable) food for your leadership, tools and medicine for these times.

There are amazing people across our rohe and beyond who are right now at the flax roots practicing leadership and taking care of those most affected. In particular, we want to give a shout out to the incredible mahi of our friends at Te Tāpui Atawhai Auckland City Mission. If you are searching for ways to help, you can donate to help them continue their much needed work.

Stay safe e te whānau,

Anya Satyanand, Pūmānawa Kaiarahi CE
