A Year of Growth and Challenge - Alumni Reflection

Class of 2022 Alum Josh Martin, Community and Youth Development at Shore Junction, reflects on his year on the NZLP.

The New Zealand Leadership Programme is an incredible opportunity for anyone looking to grow as a leader and as a person. This year-long course, led by the amazing Dan Gerrard, brought together 32 leaders from around Aotearoa. However, that's not the only reason this programme is so special.

One of the most exciting parts of the programme is the amazing guest speakers, who are leaders in their own right. I can't spoil that for you, but let's just say they brought a wealth of knowledge, experience, and inspiration to the retreats. We were able to learn from their successes and their failures, and it gave us a glimpse into what it takes to be a truly great leader. There was even scope to ask questions and challenge/be challenged by them.

The programme is structured around seven retreats held across Aotearoa, each with a different focus. Each retreat was a unique and immersive experience that challenged us to step out of our comfort zones and to grow as leaders.

The programme is designed to help you develop your leadership skills while also encouraging personal growth. We were challenged to reflect on our own beliefs and biases, and to rediscover our own unique strengths and identities. As a Māori, I was able to celebrate my heritage and start a journey of self-discovery.

The sense of community we built throughout the programme was also incredible. We were all there to support each other, and it was amazing to see how we all evolved as leaders and as people. The support we received from each other helped us to navigate the challenges and create a positive and supportive environment.

I left the programme not only having grown as an amazing leader, but also, more so, proud of my identity as a Gay Māori Man. If you're ready to take your leadership skills to the next level, if you're ready to push yourself and grow personally, then apply now and see where this incredibly transformative journey takes you!
